5. How to Access Downstate Lotus-Notes Email
 

To search the Anesthesia Library Online Catalog, you may either use the computer in the Anesthesia Library or make a disk copy from the Librarian, and use it in any computer with Microsoft Works software. The Library still keeps the card catalog which is locate on the top of the computer cabinet. The card catalog has not been updated since 1997.

To access the Online Catalog, double click on the Anesthesia Library Catalog icon from our Library's computer menu. There are three ways to find information, here are two simple methods:

1. Highlighting with Find

* Choose Find from the EDIT menu. Type a term you seek. Click on <OK>. You can type less than a complete entry, but type enough to weed out similar entries, e.g. typing bus you will find not only bus, but business, busy, and bush.

2.Simple Queries

* Choose CREATE NEW QUERY from the TOOLS menu.

* Change the name that WORKS has given the query you are about to create, e.g. change AUTHOR to TITLE.

* For every criterion you want to include in the query, complete one row.

Click on APPLY NOW icon.

VIEWING RECORDS

After finding information, switch from list view to form view by clicking on different icons.

SHOWING DISPLAYED RECORDS

After viewing your results (the other records are temporarily hidden), you can switch back the displayed records by choosing SHOW ALL RECORDS from the VIEW menu.

The Anesthesia Library Online Catalog and web site, the Medical Research Center Library Online catalog and website, PubMed, internet, ccMail or BMEC email, Anesthesia Simulator 3.0, WordPerfect 8.0, and scanning programs can be accessed in the Anesthesia Library.

HOW TO SEARCH THE ANESTHESIA LIBRARY ONLINE CATALOG

  • Double click on Anesthesia Library Catalog icon, you will find any information in the Library. For more information on how to search our OPAC, please click here.

HOW TO ACCESS MEDLINE

Method 1: Double click on the Internet icon, enter www.hscbklyn.edu in URL (locator), press <ENTER> key, then click on Medical Research Library of Brooklyn, Databases, Databases by Title, M button, and any Medline database sequentially (Follow the instruction on the screen).

Method 2: Double click on the Telnet to BMEC icon.

Type hscbklyn.edu at IP Host/gateway, and click on CONNECT.

Enter your login name and password, press <ENTER>.

When the Main Library's main menu appears, enter 2, press <ENTER>, enter 2 again, and press <ENTER>. Ask the Librarian the login name and the password, then follow the instructions on the screen.

HOW TO SEARCH THE MAIN LIBRARY ONLINE CATALOG

  • Follow the above method 1, click on Catalog after finding the Library web site.
  • Follow the above method 2, enter 2 when reaching the main menu, then enter 1.

HOW TO USE THE INTERNET EXPLORER

  • Double click on Microsoft Explorer (5.0), and fill out URL, e.g. http://www.asahq.org, and press <ENTER>.

HOW TO ACCESS THE ANESTHESIA LIBRARY WEBSITE

  • Double click on the Internet icon, enter https://www.angelfire.com/ny/sunyanesthesialib/index.html in URL, then press <ENTER>.

    HOW TO ACCESS YOUR CC EMAIL ACCOUNT

    • Double click on the CC: Mail icon, enter your last name, and first name as the login name, type password, and click on <OK>.

      (NOTE: To apply for your ccmail account, please contact the Computer Ceter at x4621.)

    HOW TO SCAN YOUR TEXTS AND IMAGES

    • Double click on OmniPage icon for scanning text, or PhotoImpact icon for scanning images. The scanner should be turned on first; otherwise reboot the computer. For more information, please click here.

3. How to Scan Text and Image

The following is a simplified menu for scanning. For more information, please read the original menu. Before scanning, turn on the scanner first, then the computer (If the computer is on already, reboot it). Then open the scanner lid. Put the material to be scanned, face down with top of the page toward the window, on the scanner glass against the edge of the rulers. Close the lid.

How to scan the text

  • Double click on the OPLIMIT to Scan Text icon.
  • Click on NEW JOB from the File menu, or click on the icon with paper in a hand.
  • Click on SCAN menu when the Load Scanner Window opens.
  • After scanning the first page, click on Stop Scanning if one page to be scanned or Add Pages if more pages to be scanned.
  • After clicking on Stop Scanning, Save As Window opens. Choose Drive A (Default is drive C), and enter a file's name, and click on OK. It is saved as a file.
  • To exit, click on the File menu, drag and highlight EXIT.

The default format is WordPerfect 6.1, and it can be changed from the File Type window to other formats.

How to scan the image

  • Double click on the PhotoImpact SE to Scan Image icon.
  • Choose ACQUIRE from the File menu, highlight IMAGE menu, enter a file name, click on Save, and click on ACQUIRE from the Acquire Image Window.
  • Click on PREVIEW to see a preliminary view of the image.
  • Click on icon to select the final area to be scanned (Click and drag on the mouse to form a frame).
  • Click on the first icon at the upper right of the screen. The Type Menu Window opens (To scan color image, choose Millions of colors, to scan black & white image, choose 256 shades of gray, to scan line art, choose line art. Resolution for color or black & white images should be 72 dpi, and line art 300 dpi).
  • Click on SCAN icon. The image is delivered to your image-editing software, where it can be edited further and saved as a file.
  • To exit, click on the FILE menu, drag and highlight EXIT.

5. How to Access Downstate Lotus-Notes Email

To access your Downstate Medical Center Lotus-Notes email, please follow the steps below:

1. Go to Downstate email website at: http://email.downstate.edu.

2. Enter your full name as Username, click on Login.

3. Enter changeme as password for the first time, click on Login. You can access your email now, and change your password after logging in your account.

The sample email address for John Adams is either : john.adams@downstate.edu, or, jadams@downstate.edu.

If you cannot access your email account, please contact the Computer Center at (718)270-2593. We will use your Downstate Lotus-Notes email address to communicate with you in the future.
